One person thought it was a badge of honor to have the most overtime. I had to tell them that if it happened again, they would be dismissed because it showed they werenât able to do their work. If only employees knew they could regain their lives, please their boss, and be more productive by working fewer hours.
Symbols of productivity are thinly veiled attempts to hardly work while appearing to be hardworking. Work Syncing does not mean misleading people or office-politicking to earn extra points from a corner-office boss. Moral authority is earned, not given by formality.
Work Syncing means you do the most useful thing at the most useful time to produce the highest-value utility.
In his book Deep Work, Cal Newport examines the workflow of Adam Grant, Wharton professor and bestselling author. Newport discovered that Grant âstacks his teaching into the Fall semester, during which he can turn all of his attention to teaching well and being available to his students.⦠Grant can then turn his attention fully to research in the spring and summer, and tackle this work with less distraction.â In essence, when your work is prioritized, stacked, and synced, your time is organized so that you turn your attention to where it needs to go with less distraction.
Whatever you do for a living (or however you might change the nature of your career), think imaginatively to sync your work to when you work best and to protect your autonomy to live Final Cause.
Work Syncing takes courage and creativity, but you can incrementally make small changes with intention and effort that have a big, asymmetrical impact.
When youâre intentional about when you work and on what, you develop a deep and meaningful impact both on yourself and on those you coordinate with to deliver for those who are counting on you.
